Editing/checking of an input Email Address at RidgeStar is made up of two general mechanisms. They are:
- Syntax validation
- Does the Email address appear in the proper format)?

- Mail Server validation
- Is there an operational Mail Server associated with the Domain?

The specified Domain normally has a Mail Server definition (MX) specified in Domain Name Service (DNS) for the domain. The RidgeStar editing routines will search DNS in an effort to establish the identity of the corresponding Mail Server and, if defined, will use that definition to determine whether or not the Mail Server is defined to the Internet in a way that is acceptable to the RidgeStar Mail Server.
- Does the Mail Server system have a valid Reverse DNS entry/PTR defined?

In an effort to defeat inappropriate use of Internet Mail Service (SMTP), the RidgeStar Mail Server requires that an initiating/sending Mail Server be defined to DNS (Domain Name Service) in such a way that we can confirm the Mail Server. We do this by looking up the IP Address associated with the defined Mail Server (extracted from DNS) and then using that IP Address to locate a Reverse DNS entry (identified as a PTR entry).
To demonstrate this, you can enter an Email address below and see how the editing operation would apply if this Tool was activated on your RidgeStar Site:
