Reference: HTML-Plugins/Flash?

If you can see the motion graphic below - it's because you have the proper plug-in to view Flash. If you can't see the graphic you'll understand one of the most fundamental down-sides to using web features which require 3rd party plug-ins: Not everyone has them! Some plug-ins are more widespread than others, but there is no way to guarantee that your customer will have the plug-in that you require. Even worse, many users find it frustrating to come across information that requires a plug-in that they don't have.

The more important issue though is what value do you provide for the user if they do take the time and trouble to download the plug-in? The graphic above is "splashy" - but does it really help the user? Does it provide valuable information or insight? If you do want to take advantage of new technology - do it for the right reasons. Add value to your customer's use of your site.

On the other hand, if your company's main selling point is your image - then using motion graphics may be a possible choice. There are things you can do with this kind of graphic that you can't do with static image files - or even animated images. They allow an almost movie-like quality. You can design quite an elaborate presentation. The need for the level of image advertising that would require plug-ins is quite rare for many businesses - who have much more valuable products and services to feature.

Before believing the hype with Flash and other splashy motion graphics requiring plug-ins - take your customer into consideration. Will they have the plug-in? Will it be worth it for them to download the plug-in? If the answer is yes - we can design almost any kind of motion graphic you can imagine.
